Monday 18th September.

Good news today, the Huddersfield Examiner has got hold of a new glum picture of Steve Bruce. The new images show a despondent looking Town manager trudging off the pitch after Saturday’s defeat against Gillingham, his chin almost as low as it was after the Fulham defeat last season. Looking resplendent in his best suit he has the look of a condemned man, and he is fighting an uphill battle to lift a team who languish just one place above the second division pace setters.

He is trying his best to talk things up, saying that we still have 39 games to pull things around, but a record of just 8 wins in the last 30 games speaks volumes. Assurances that he will lift the players as they look to improve on a points haul of 4 from 7 games are beginning to wear a bit thin. We now have a similar total (3 from 7 games), which saw Brian Horton replaced by Peter Jackson 3 years ago, and if money wasn’t so tight the noose might be. I suspect that even if Town wanted to let Bruce go they are reluctant to, because any new appointment would ask for funds for players and this just doesn’t seem to be on the agenda at the moment.

Once again we picked up an injury on Saturday, with Martin Smith taking a knock on his Achilles forcing his substitution in the 63rd minute. It doesn’t seem to be too serious so hopefully he will be OK for Saturday’s home game against Burnley.
