Chapter Two

Pre-Season

Monday 17th July.

Town's' official pre-season fixtures got underway today with a 2-1 win against Livingston of the Scottish First Division, the Town goals scored by Dean Gorré and Delroy Facey. It's good to see Dean Gorré fit again as he provides a touch of class and excitement to the midfield, and nice to see that Steve Bruce is finally prepared to give Delroy a chance.

Although this was obviously an experimental side, it is also pleasing to see Thornley given a game as it began to look as though he might be destined to depart the club late last season when he seemed to be frozen out by Mr Bruce. I was most surprised to see David Beresford given a run out, it's been so long since his last first team game, and in fact I'd almost forgotten that he was still on the playing staff.

One other interesting feature was the inclusion of Martin Margetson in goal. Having joined Town at the start of last season from Southend United, I think he was named on every team sheet yet never actually played in any of them! This could be a trivia question of the future - which Town player was selected for every game in the 1999/2000 season, yet never kicked the ball?
