Monday 7th August

Today was the day that the Town board of directors and Steve Bruce had their summit talks, or was this the day that they all sat down picking their noses wondering where the petty cash tin key had gone?

I felt a certain excitement wondering which player would be first on the shopping list, Gallen; Iwan; Booth; Berhalter; Sansoni, or all of them! It must only be a question of Barry Rubery asking everyone to sit tight until he was back and he would sign the cheque himself.

Fat chance! Why do I still believe in miracles after 30 years of the same old story? Whilst the rest of us are busy losing their will to live, Mr R is losing the will to write cheques. It seems that we will now have to wait until they manage to bring in new partners, and Telecommunications Company NTL seem to be the ones that are most highly tipped.

Apparently they were thrashing out a strategy today. Cobblers! The only strategy we have seen of late is one of 'let's wait and hope that we win the lottery'. There is clearly a lack of enthusiasm for the 3-year plan (more cobblers) that has clearly died a death after just 1 year. Maybe we'll do a Bradford - spend sod all and fluke promotion!

Ian Ayre has also produced another classic comment today, "Plenty of other clubs haven't spent over the summer, and many of those haven't made the investment that we've made already." Please stop treating us like morons, only 2 clubs in division one have failed to add to their squads, Sheffield Wednesday and us. The former have well publicised financial problems, so these other non-spending clubs will probably include the likes of Rochdale, Barnet, Hartlepool etc. so we have some prestigious company, don't we?

Five days to the new season and I don't feel confident. In fact I'm not even sure whether I'm really looking forward to it.
