The bitter end

Saturday 29th July.

The proposed move by Andy Booth to Wolves has collapsed, so once again (yawn, yawn) Town seem to be top of the list. It's been 5 months since Town's last signing, and I think they have forgotten how it's done. It was reported that Wednesday were prepared to accept £700,000 from Wolves with a further £500,000 based on appearances, so maybe that's around £700,000 too much, but maybe we'll just have to wait and see. Bruce has admitted his interest but also admitted that no official approach has been made, so all this speculation seems to be nothing more than conjecture.

The pre-season fixtures continued today with a visit to Port Vale, and just for a change Radio Leeds Leeds Leeds (yes there are 3 other clubs in West Yorkshire) actually had some regular score updates which was just as well because eight goals were scored. With a final score of Port Vale 2 - Town 6, it was a good pre-season confidence booster. With 2 goals from Martin Smith, and 1 each from Sansoni, Beech, Gallen and Edwards, it maintained Town's unbeaten start in excellent style. Despite the bitterness about the sudden departure of Marcus Stewart last season, the crowd recognised that Martin Smith looks a steal at £300,000 and I for one am looking forward to what he might produce given an injury free season. Although there never seemed any danger of Town not winning, once again our defence seems as if it may be on the generous side by letting Port Vale notch twice, and hopefully Messrs. Bruce and Deehan will sort this out before August 12th.

On the down side, Ken Monkou, despite missing the Scottish part of the pre-season tour to give his hamstring injury plenty of time to heal fully, only lasted 44 minutes and had to go off with (you've guessed it) a hamstring injury. With centre backs Berhalter and now Sansoni being checked out, perhaps this position is a priority if Big Ken is going to be absent as often as he was last season.
