Thursday 27th July.
In the paper tonight, Ian Ayre has provided an "intriguing insight"
into the club's signings policy. As part of the new video he does
at least accept that more depth is needed in the squad, and confirmed
that funds would be made available if the right player becomes available
at the right price.
This is very frustrating, as apart from a flurry of new arrivals
at the start of last season hardly any players seem to have met
this criteria, which must be little or no transfer fee and low wage
demands. Other clubs of a similar stature seem to manage in the
transfer market, so why can't we?
The sale of Marcus Stewart was once again justified on the grounds
of being 'good business', which allowed us to bring in Martin Smith,
Chris Holland and Chris Hay. I still feel that it is a huge shame
that having achieved so much last season the board could rustle
up an extra £½ million to at least see us into the play offs. They
could always have got rid of Stewart in the summer (albeit at a
lower price perhaps, but still at a profit) if we failed to achieve
promotion. Further justification from the 'wise one' was made by
the fact that Stewart picked up an injury soon after joining Ipswich.
No mention of the debut goal or the one at Wembley. Anyway, at least
the bank was kept happy - bless!
