Monday 24th July.
According to Mervyn Smooth in the local rag tonight, Steve Bruce
is hoping to get the go ahead to sign the Polish trialist Tomek
Iwan, and if the reports are anything to go by sounds like an exciting
acquisition. A fee of around £300,000 has been mentioned, and surely
even Town can conjure up this kind of figure.
Our favourite Chairman, Ian Ayre, claims that Town will move when
the right player is available at the right price. Yawn, yawn, not
the same old rhetoric, we all know that this means a player who
only commands the minimum wage arriving on a free transfer! Seemingly,
none of the board of directors watched the game against Motherwell,
which is a great shame because about 800 dedicated fans made the
long trip, if only the men in suits were as committed as the fans.
Even the player himself is quoted as saying how he would like to
join us as he wants regular first team football to boost his international
chances, and he is not assured of this at PSV Eindhoven. I hope
the board proves me wrong, but I've got a feeling that we'll find
a way of missing out.
The first round fixture in the Worthington Cup was announced today,
and we face the short trip over the Pennines to Oldham Athletic,
with the first leg at Boundary Park probably on Tuesday August 22nd,
with the second leg at the McAlpine 2 weeks later.
