Thursday 28th December.
After the euphoria of recent results, today brought the subject
of finances back into focus with the latest statement from Barry
Rubery. The club owner was at least big enough to admit that mistakes
had been made on the financial side of the club, and that measures
were being taken to ensure that the wages were reduced and not allowed
to spiral out of control again. He also admitted that the sale of
Marcus Stewart was a big mistake, but because no other offer had
previously been received from any other club it was seen as a deal
they couldn’t refuse. A dozen goals in the Premiership this season
have proved how wrong they were, but what’s done is done.
Assurances were made that everything possible would be done to
secure the services of Peter Ndlovu for a longer period than the
existing month, and rebuild some bridges by securing the Zimbabwean’s
services at least until the end of the season. For the time being,
let’s hope that the financial and footballing sides of the club
can be stabilised and that this will all be forgotten in 6 months
time. There are a number of expensive players who will no doubt
depart the McAlpine in the summer, and hopefully we will be able
to rebuild a team capable of achieving the supposed 3-year promotion
aim.
Speaking of expensive players, Ken Monkou has been offered a move
to Swindon Town, presumably on loan. It would be nice to think they
would take him off our hands permanently, but to be realistic I
think his wage demands are probably too high, but even a month would
be a start. It seems strange that they would want to sign an injured
player, so clearly this piece of misinformation is not true and
he is simply surplus to Macari's requirements and out in the cold.
Not a bad way to earn a few grand a week!
