Thursday 21st September.
Last night the reserves managed to achieve something that the
first team couldn’t, they beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 at Boundary Park.
Of more significance however was that the victory was achieved without
Ken Monkou for 85 minutes of the game as once again our overpaid
and under performing Dutch defender has suffered a recurrence of
his hamstring injury.
If Monkou wasn’t a footballer he would be in serious danger of
being sacked in most other professions as he has hardly managed
a full day’s work in the last 6 months. Rumour has it that he is
earning in the region of £10,000 per week, and for a player who
is not performing this is excessive particularly with Town’s pecuniary
limitations at present. £10,000 per week equates to around £½ million
per year, and if the alleged £5 million wage bill is true then this
is around 10% of the bill on just one player. We are not a big enough
club to carry expensive passengers like Monkou and one or two others
who are on Premiership contracts who spend more time in the reserves
or on the treatment table, and somehow we could do with clearing
these players out, now! We might then be able to bring in some replacements
who might be lower on pedigree but higher on commitment to the cause.
