Tuesday 8th August.
Following yesterday's summit meeting at the club, little is being
revealed about how much money is available for team acquisitions,
if any. Certainly no players have miraculously appeared on the clubs
payroll in the last 24 hours, although Kevin Gallen has had a 'precautionary
scan' just in case.
It would appear that Steve Bruce has been told that the financial
cupboard is bare, and it makes me wonder how long he will stick
it out. He resigned from Sheffield United when promised funds were
not forthcoming, and maybe it's only a matter of time before he
does the same again. Whilst browsing a fans forum on the Internet,
a poll asked if people thought he would still be our manager at
the end of the season. I voted no, and only time will tell if I
am to be proved right or wrong, but remember where you read it first
folks!
Apparently, Ipswich has monitored Greg Berhalters progress, so
we'll have to get our skates on or risk losing out. One player who
will not be pulling on a blue and white shirt (or at least not one
of Town's) next season is Tomek Iwan. It transpires that the wage
demands of the Polish International were too high so Town's interest
has cooled. Perhaps he was talking in Zloty whilst Town thought
he was talking Pounds Sterling alas we shall probably never know.
Anyway with just 4 days to go before the start of the season who
knows what this week will bring? Actually we do - nothing but excuses.
Nice to hear that one of our recent folk heroes is still plying
his trade in the game, albeit at non-league level. Ian Dunn scored
last night for Harrogate Town as they beat Halifax Town 2-1 in a
friendly match. Dunny shot to instant popularity with the Town faithful
with a goal against Bradford on his debut after only about 20 minutes.
I seem to remember that the follicly challenged one then scored
again against the old enemy only a few weeks later in the cup (or
was it the other way round?).
He will also be remembered for scoring a goal at home to Stoke
City struck with such venom that the ball lodged in the stanchion
at the top of the net, and also for coming on as a second half substitute
in the play off final against Bristol Rovers. Having only been on
the pitch about a minute or so, he provided the perfect cross for
Chris Billy to score the winning goal. What a day! Best wishes to
an unlikely hero of the mid 90's.
