Saturday 22nd July.
Town's third and last game of their Scottish tour took place today
at Fir Park against Motherwell. After finishing fourth in the Scottish
premier league last season this always looked to be the hardest
game of the trio, and this was borne out by the result. Having won
the previous games 2-1, Town had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Chris
Beech equalising on 72 minutes. He seemed to have a knack of popping
up in the right place at the right time last season scoring 10 goals
from midfield and showing what a good signing Peter Jackson made
from Hartlepool for £100.000.
One or two selections were curious although were probably a result
of Steve Bruce wishing to give every player a run out yet these
might provide an option or two once the season proper gets underway.
Rob Edwards, (another player whose chances were limited last season)
who is more of a natural left footer played at right back and this
is probably about the only position he hadn't played before. The
other unusual selection was to play Craig Armstrong as a deep midfielder,
although after some of his later performances last season maybe
the surprise was that he was playing at all! Tomek Iwan had a highly
impressive game and must be increasing his chances of appearing
on Steve Bruce's Christmas list, (knowing Town it will be December
when they stop dawdling) and we can but hope that the board back
him with some cash.
At least we remained unbeaten, and relatively unscathed with injuries.
