Tuesday 20th June.
England played Romania in the last group-qualifying match tonight,
but as I had some important college work to do my girlfriend taped
the match so I could watch it when I got home. I got home about
9.15 but had to wait until about 9.40 before I could sit down and
watch the game having avoided the result all night. I tried to read
Machala's body language to guess if England had won, and I got the
impression that everything was OK.
Settling down to watch the game, Romania went into a 1-goal lead,
but I didn't feel concerned, and when Shearer and Owen put England
2-1 up just before half time I started to look forward to the Italy
game in the quarter final. Even when Romania made it 2-2 early in
the second half, I still felt confident as a draw would be enough.
I couldn't believe my eyes when Phil Neville clumsily dropped one
of the Romanians in the Penalty area, and they converted the spot
kick to win the match 3-2. I was gutted. So many times I have had
high hopes for our national side, and so many times I have been
disappointed. A bit like watching Town really.
Let's hope that Town win the first division championship as well
as the FA and Worthington cups, and this coupled with Bradford's
relegation will dissipate my disappointment.
