Thursday 15th March.
Town’s game against Preston a week on Saturday has been postponed
due to international call-ups. Surprisingly this isn’t as a result
of Craig Armstrong being called into the Scotland squad and Nico
Vaesen into the Belgian squad, but because Preston have three international
players. Apparently the most surprising absentee is their Finnish
goalkeeper Tuevo Moilanen who hasn’t figured internationally for
over a year, but it has conspired to give Town another blank Saturday.
This will give Town’s last 9 fixtures a very lop-sided look with
only 3 games at home and 6 away over a period of about 5 weeks.
This is the sort of fixture congestion we could have done without,
but there’s nothing we can do about it other than pick up as many
home wins as possible from the rapidly diminishing fixtures at the
McAlpine to ease the pressure when we travel.
Town have had American midfielder John Thorington on trial with
the club for a couple of months now and this is a couple of months
longer than most of our triallists last. He started his career at
Old Trafford and then moved to Bayer Leverkusen, but a serious injury
halted his career progress. However it seems that he has impressed
during his trial and has been offered a contract. It remains to
be seen whether he will put pen to paper, but I have a suspicion
if he does then he will be the only one with just 7 days remaining
before the signings deadline passes.
