Tuesday 22nd August.

Like vultures round a carcass, other clubs are starting to target our players who all now seem to have their price. Today, Wolves are reported to have made an offer suggested to be around £1 million for Chris Lucketti and although this has so far been rejected the worry is, how long for?

Anyway Town were in action in the first leg of their Worthington Cup tie against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park, but it sounds as though most of the action came from the home team. I didn’t go to the game, but decided to try out the commentary on offer from our local station Home 107.9. They have only just started covering Town but it was quite endearing – not super professional but nicely biased towards Town. Unfortunately it seemed to be a night when there wasn’t too much for Mr Crawshaw and his compatriot to enthuse over.

After Saturday’s magnificent performance this sounded to be an extremely lack lustre performance and one in which we were lucky to be only bringing back a one goal deficit to the McAlpine for the return match in a fortnight’s time. Seemingly it took Town 47 minutes to manage their first shot on target whilst Nico Vaesen was busy keeping the scoreline down to something respectable, although he was apparently unable to do much about Carlo Corazzin's 24th minute header, which proved to be the only goal of the game. There was little of real note, and certainly nothing worthy of an entry in this diary.

It seems as though the fringe players such as Thornley, Facey and Hay who had to fill the void left by the injured players didn’t perform as they might and this doesn’t bode well for the next few weeks of the season. Chris Hay is like a square peg in a round hole when he pulls on a first team shirt and Ben Thornley appears to have lost the ability to cross the ball on the few occasions he actually beats his man. We host Crystal Palace on Saturday who we thrashed 7-1 last season, let’s hope that they don’t reverse that scoreline this time.

Later in the evening I was really sick and wondered if it was caused by Town’s defeat or Bradford’s surprising 2-0 win over Chelsea. It must have been the latter because, let’s face it, it’s a bit hard to stomach.
